Merion Mercy Academy juniors Ashley Gomes and Sofiia Berestetska captured the PIAA 2A state doubles tournament title Nov. 5. In the championship final, they defeated Emma Perkins and Victoria Waltz of Conrad Weiser, 7-5, 6-3.
Gomes and Berestetska, the District 1 2A champions, won all four of their matches at the PIAA 2A state tournament in straight sets. Perkins and Waltz, the District 3 champions, won their first three matches in straight sets.
Gomes and Berestetska both played singles throughout the regular season, and were undefeated at first singles and second singles, respectively. They teamed up for the District 1 2A doubles tournament.
In the PIAA 3A doubles tournament, the Radnor duo of junior Leina Ciarrocchi and senior Mia Xie finished second, and the Conestoga pair of junior Kate Emmanuel and freshman Isabel Emmanuel placed fourth.
