Harriton’s Roshkoff, Sassoli capture PIAA state doubles title

Harriton’s Sophia Sassoli and Saige Roshkoff captured the PIAA 3A state doubles title Nov. 3.

Rosemont >> Harriton’s Saige Roshkoff and Sophia Sassoli, who captured the PIAA Class AAA state doubles championship Nov. 3, are no strangers when it comes to playing doubles together.
When the duo was age 10 and 12 respectively, they teamed up and won a USTA Middle States sectional tournament.  Little did they know that, five years later, they would take the court together again with higher stakes on the line.
“I always have fun when I play doubles with Sophia,” said Roshkoff following their run to the PIAA District One Class AAA doubles title Oct. 24. “It was as fun now as it was then, and I am happy to share this moment with her.”
Sassoli added, “I really appreciate Saige reaching out to me and asking if we wanted to play doubles together. I always have fun playing with Saige and felt we could make a strong team.”
On Nov. 3, the pair completed a historical run through the PIAA Class AAA state doubles tournament when they defeated Methacton High School’s Dina Nouaime and Tina Prince – the same team they defeated in the district final – 6-1, 6-2 to claim the state championship.
“Earning a state title means a lot,” said Sassoli. “Harriton tennis has been a big part of my fall for the past four years and I could not ask for a better way to end my high school career.”
The win by Roshkoff and Sassoli capped off a magical season for the Harriton tennis team that won the team state title Oct. 27 when they finished off a 20-0 season, defeating Conestoga for the third time in a month.
Roshkoff and Sassoli also became the first pair from District One to win the state doubles title since Lower Merion Merion’s Julie Raezer and Kristen Roth won it back in 2005. Lower Merion also won its only team state title that season.
“I am so excited for Sophia and Saige,” said Harriton girls’ tennis coach Kathi Rees. “They are an unbelievable pair who are extremely focused and aggressive on the doubles court and they played like true champions!”
Interestingly, Roshkoff and Sassoli become the first Harriton duo to win the state doubles title since 1979, when Sue Taylor and Laura LaFair won it. That Harriton team was coached by Rees’ father, Bill Zimmerman.
Dating back to Sept. 26 when Roshkoff and Sassoli won the Central League doubles crown, the pair went on to capture the District 1 crown Oct. 24, dropping only five games in four matches before losing only six games in their four state matches.

State champ Harriton well represented on All-Central tennis team

The Harriton girls tennis team claimed the PIAA Class 3A team tennis title without dropping a match in districts or states. The Rams added the PIAA Class 3A doubles title via Sophia Sasolli and Saige Roshkoff.

It’s no surprise then that the Rams headline the All-Central tennis teams, as voted by league coaches.

Sasolli and Roshkoff land on the first singles team, with the doubles tandem of Connie Richards and Mackenzie Sherman representing the Rams on the first doubles team.

Radnor’s Kanon Cairrocchi is a first-team singles player; she teamed up with Lucy Hederick (second team singles) to make the PIAA Class 3A doubles tournament. A pair of Radnor doubles squads – Annie Burton and Caroline Egg-Krings, and Grace Frigerio and Jessica Gusdorff —earned spots on the first team.

Below are the lists of singles and doubles teams.

Note: All-Central teams are selected by league coaches. The Daily Times and papreplive.com has no influence in the process.

17 Owen J. Roberts seniors sign national letters of intent

Owen J. Roberts High School held its national signing day earlier this month where 17 senior student athletes elected to sign with their respective colleges and universities.

Among the athletes were five soccer players, three lacrosse players, two field hockey players, two baseball players, two softball players, a tennis player, a runner and a rower.

DLN ALL-AREA: Downingtown West’s Bradley keeps it in family, caps career with another honor

$

The Bradley name has become synonymous with tennis excellence at Downingtown West. Jordan Bradley has seen it through to its natural conclusion.

The Whippets’ senior ace, Jordan Bradley wrapped her scholastic career this fall with a second consecutive Chest-Mont League title — following in the career footsteps of older sister Payton, who won four. That makes six consecutive seasons in which a Bradley sister has won the league title.

For her continued success and a nearly-unbeaten run through the local slate this season, Bradley repeats as the Daily Local News’ All-Area Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

Bradley’s ascension to the top spot at Downingtown West, following two seasons as understudy to Payton, seemed as natural as two sisters growing up playing a sport together. In fact, they’ll be teammates once again next season, when Jordan joins Payton at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

“I am so excited about that,” Jordan said. “Hopefully, we’ll be playing doubles together. All summer, we’ll be working and practicing together, which is going to be great.”

Jordan credited Payton for helping develop her mental game during their two years together as Whippets, as good a 1-2 punch as any in the region.

“What was good about having her with me for those two years, was that I got to see her and learned a lot from her and was able to think about how to prepare for when she was gone,” Bradley, 18, said of her older sister. “So I was able to be a lot more prepared than other might be, as opposed to jumping in at No. 1 as a freshman. Being No. 2 and learning from her helped me gain confidence. If you have the confidence, you can accomplish so much more than you think you can.”

The timeline of Jordan becoming the No. 1 at West also dovetailed with Justin Depietropaolo’s appointment as West head coach.

“Jordan is very mentally tough and a very gritty player,” said Depietropaolo, the second-year head coach. “She doesn’t lose to players that she’s supposed to beat. Her biggest thing is her confidence. She goes into every match expecting to win. As far as her strokes, she’s a powerful player and when’s she’s on, she hits right through people.

“She was the best No. 2 player in District 1, if not whole state, when I came on board. When you’re at 2, you don’t see the best opponents at every school. When you step up to 1, you’re getting the best. We scheduled some pretty good opponents over the past two years, so when you’re playing Conestoga, you’re getting Conestoga’s best. Souderton, so she got to play Caitlin Le. And so on. She was able to rise to the task.”

An aggressive baseliner who consistently attacks points, Bradley compiled a 15-1 record during her senior regular season campaign, losing only to Caitlin Le of Souderton. She gained a measure of retribution later, however, by beating her good friend Le in the District 1 third-place match by a 7-6 (5), 6-2 score, ahead of states.

“As the years have gone on, I’ve gotten a better court sense,” Bradley said. “I’ve become smarter with my shot selection and that’s helped me so much going into big tournaments. … If you have more of that knowledge, the court sense, you have an edge.”

Depietropaolo said, “When she’s able to set up on the ball, especially the forehand side, she hits through the ball perfectly. If she gets a short ball, she’s gonna put that ball away, because that ball travels off her racquet faster than a lot of girls in the area.”

Bradley defeated West Chester Henderson’s Hannah Baxter 6-2, 6-4 in the Ches-Mont League final to win the league crown for a second straight season. “It’s great, but it’s tough. It’s a good tournament to win,” she said.

Bradley’s final high school postseason run from there was heavy on déjà vu.

Clinching the third slot out of District 1 set Bradley on a collision course with North Allegheny’s Ashley Huang in the state quarterfinals. Huang triumphed 6-1, 6-2 and eventually made it to the state championship match — where she lost to North Penn’s Neha Velaga.

It was Velaga who had stopped Bradley in the District 1 semifinals a couple weeks prior by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Bradley had defeated McDowell’s Lindsey Fadden 6-2, 6-0 in her first-round PIAA match earlier that opening day at Hershey Racquet Club. Fadden and Velaga were the same two state opponents for a second consecutive season for Bradley.

“At the end of the day, I gave it my best shot,” Bradley said. “Yeah, it was a little disappointing. Senior year, last thing you want to do is lose second round on the first day of states. I just had to move on and let it go.

“I’ve learned a lot about myself. A lot of things you learn from tennis you can apply to everyday life, which is so important. And that’s why I love tennis, and high school tennis, so much.”

Presenting 2018 All-Main Line girls tennis teams

The Main Line high school girls’ tennis scene last fall featured, as always, a strong lineup of championship-caliber teams, led by two unbeaten teams, Harriton and Episcopal Academy.
Harriton (20-0) captured the PIAA Class 3A state team title. Episcopal Academy (15-0) captured both the Inter-Ac title and the Inter-Ac tournament championship.
A match was scheduled before the season between these two squads; unfortunately, the contest was cancelled later in the fall.
In the Central League, other strong teams included Conestoga (19-3), which advanced to the PIAA 3A state championship final; Radnor (13-3) and Lower Merion (9-6).
In the Inter-Ac, Baldwin School posted a 5-1 league record, and Agnes Irwin was 4-2.
In the Friends’ Schools League, Friends’ Central (11-4) and Shipley (10-3) both enjoyed fine seasons; and in the AACA, Merion Mercy Academy (13-3) finished third.
The All-Main Line high school girls’ tennis teams are selected by the coaches. Because Main Line Media News covers 19 high schools, the Main Line Media News sports staff limits the number of spots available to first team, second team and honorable mention — but follows the priority of coaches’ selections.
What follows are the 2018 All-Main Line high school girls’ tennis teams:

Introducing the All-Delco Database …

“Many may disagree with the choices herein, but no writer is infallible and it is our opinion that the players selected are standouts in their positions.”

Those words graced the pages of what was then The Chester Times in the fall of 1933, an introduction to (and preemptive apology for) the paper’s all-star football team. Nearly a century later, the lead it set still resonates.

For nearly 100 years, the Daily Times and its antecedents have in one form or another picked teams that we’ve called All-Delcos. For a paper that has long elevated coverage of local (particularly high school) sports, in a place as uniquely proud and independent as Delaware County, it has been a perfect match. But for too long, that history was only hinted at, in occasional reminders in print, in the collective memory of those involved, in the hard-to-access recesses of archives and filing cabinets.

That changes today. Over the last couple of years, since the Daily Times move from our offices in Primos to our new digs in Swarthmore, we’ve been trying to wrangle our All-Delco history into an operable form, something accessible as more than just microfilm or dusty old clippings. We’re happy to present the product of that work: A searchable, interactive database of All-Delcos dating back as far as we can find them.

A little history

All-Delcos have in one name or another been picked for decades. The football teams, sprouting from All-Suburban teams, date to the 1930s. Basketball squads came into bloom in the 1950s, and the selection of girls teams started in the 1970s, as the Daily Times was a pioneer in the area of giving girls sports the attention they deserved.

The main inflection point came in 1987, when sports editor Chic Riebel conceived of the All-Delco banquet, annually honoring the best in high school sports. It spurred an explosion in the number of All-Delcos named, codifying our blanket coverage of Delco sports. Though the banquet has gone by the wayside, it peaked in the mid-1990s at more than 700 attendees.

“Looking at that and the fact that we were into the 1980s, with the proliferation of girls sports and all the other sports growing, it didn’t seem fair that all we did was represent a couple of traditional sports and that was it,” Riebel, a Delco Athletes Hall of Famer, said recently. “It seemed like a good way to honor more kids that were really good in sports.”

The changes deepened the meaning of the All-Delco label. Through the years, one thing has remained consistent: The schools we cover are clearly demarcated, stopping at the county’s borders. No matter how good the schools outside that line get, there’s no changing the population eligible for All-Delco. That constancy lends the award its authority, what Riebel called being the “king of your backyard.” Even as school jurisdictions shifted or consolidated, the award remained the same. Being an All-Delco is as recognizable to athletes now as decades ago, a constant for kids as their parents and even grandparents.

“Riebel wanted to do something more than run the All-Delco teams in the paper,” assistant sports editor Terry Toohey wrote in 2009. “He wanted being named All-Delco to be a memorable experience, an honor the athlete and his or her family would remember for a lifetime.”

Consider this project a way of grafting those memories into the digital present.

A couple of things to remember

The database that follows is interactive. (For more information on navigating Tableau software, this page has helpful links.). You can search through lists of past All-Delco winners; in many cases, you can sort by an individual name, school or year. We’ve also manipulated the data to tease out trends and tell a little bit of our story.

The first slide, “An All-Delco History,” offers a more in-depth history lesson. The second, “The All-Delco Database,” is the crux of the information: A searchable list of both All-Delcos and Players of the Year that allows you to sort by different parameters.

The third and fourth visualizations are where we have some fun with the data. “All-Delcos by Schools” breaks out selections based on school, sport, and players of the year. The data is also mapped across the county.

The fourth visualization starts “Digging into the Data.” We tease out a couple of special groups, looking at gender balance and multi-sport All-Delcos. For the three sports with most robust history of selections – football and boys and girls basketball – we also look at trends in which schools have filled the teams through the years.

The database we’ve built is anything but perfect, and failure points in documenting such a tract of time are myriad. Some teams weren’t archived in the panoply of technologies we’ve shuffled through. Some weren’t picked as the paper wasn’t printed due to labor strikes. In other cases, there are inconsistencies in when or if teams were picked, and the lines between teams picked explicitly by coaches as opposed to by the Daily Times in consultation (as has become standard practice) are blurry. It is important to note that only first-team selections are included, a cohort that includes nearly 8,000 honorees, and the names are as they appear at the time, not altered by any changes later in life.

All that is to say that this project is a starting point more than a finished product. There are holes in the data that require plugging, and putting this out into the world will let us continue that process (direct any questions to mdegeorge@21st-centurymedia.com). Our hope is that the database can be not only a resource to answer a specific question but something that brings up answers you didn’t know you were looking for. It would be only fitting if we could continue the conversation that All-Delco has kept going for so long.

Area teams are back on the courts, and a young Dock squad looks for some new heroes to emerge.
Said coach Cody Powis: “Our goal this preseason was to work harder than ever on our physicality and being able to sustain long matches, while playing a consistent game throughout. It will exciting to see who steps up for the team as we try to replace some of our graduated leadership.”
Gwynedd Mercy Academy is coming off a 12-2 season.
“I feel very optimistic and positive,” coach Lupe Prince said. “The group of players we have this year is pretty good. They have a good level of tennis. More of them have been practicing, individually in the offseason to improve their skill levels.
“We look forward to becoming champions of the Catholic League. The task of guiding the team during the season has been assigned to the two senior players, Isabella Kellner and Tess Flanigan. Their role is very important to deepen the enthusiasm of the team along the good and bad days of the season.”

Baldwin tennis team aims to claw its way to Inter-Ac title

Bryn Mawr >> The past couple of years, the Baldwin School tennis team has come oh-so-close in its quest to dethrone Episcopal Academy for the Inter-Ac title.
Last fall, the two teams engaged in a match that could only be described as an instant classic. With the match tied at 3-3 and sunlight quickly fading to darkness, all of the attention turned to the fourth doubles match.
In the end, it was Episcopal senior Mackenzie Lee finding the open spot on a half-volley for the final point of a 6-4, 7-5 straight set win in a match that lasted nearly two hours to clinch a 4-3 victory and the second straight Inter-Ac title for EA.
“Even though we lost a tough match to EA [at the end of last season] I am really excited for the upcoming year,” said Baldwin’s Jeff Sacks, entering his 13th year as head coach. “I feel that we have strong leadership that will really help our younger players.”
“Coming so close these past few years shows me that we have to work even harder this year,” said Baldwin senior Torrie Smith. “I am excited for what this team has in store. I love competition almost as much as I love winning and clinching the Inter-Ac title would be a great way to culminate my Baldwin tennis career.”
Returning their top three singles players, senior Torrie Smith, sophomore Izzy Antanavicius and junior co-captain Presley Daggett, the Polar Bears are poised to claw their way to the top.
The main ingredient for their recipe of success will be teamwork. In a sport viewed as mostly individual, the team aspect of tennis is having each match count the same no matter the spot on the ladder.
“Being part of the tennis team has, without a doubt, been one of my favorites experiences at Baldwin,” said Daggett. “Over the years I’ve watched past captains work with Coach Sacks to help the team grow together as players and people. Under Coach Sacks’ leadership, we’ve created a really close-knit team, that has me hopeful and excited for each season.”
Smith added, “As a co-captain you want to make sure that everyone stays until the end of the matches. Even though one may be done their individual match, no one is finished until the players in the last match walk off the court. It always helps me to have my teammates cheering for me after each point, whether the result was positive or negative. I believe that this is what helps a player or a doubles team come out on top while playing a tight match. I think our support for one another separates us from other teams.”
Playing a format that consists of three singles matches and four doubles matches, one sign of a good team is leadership bringing everyone together as one and seeing a different player step up each match.
“As co-captain it’s important to pay attention to all the players and make sure their getting the most out of practice while also having fun,” said Daggett. “Our team makes a point of having pre-season and post-season dinners or parties to get excited for the year or to recognize our accomplishments. We also make sure to incorporate other team bonding activity, such as our trip to the U.S. Open and match day lunches to keep the team excited.”
While the Baldwin players help bring the team together off the court to ensure on-court chemistry, the challenge to the coaching staff of Sacks and his wife Roni is forming the right doubles teams that they hope will help propel Baldwin towards the Inter-Ac title that has eluded them the past two years. Roni, who is entering her 10th year with the program, recently was named the first ever commissioner of the Inter-Ac JV,
“Coupled with six new varsity players we have three talented and experienced singles players,” Jeff Sacks said. “Finding the Doubles team to win that fourth decisive match will be this year’s challenge.”

East Marlborough >> In a battle of two undefeated Chester County girls tennis teams Thursday, host Unionville came out on top, sweeping the doubles matches in a 5-2 win against Downingtown West.
The Indians (now 7-0) also got a straight set (6-3, 6-4) win from junior Leah Walter at first singles, who improved her record to 7-0. Last fall, Walter captured the Ches-Mont American League singles title as a sophomore.
“Leah is one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached,” said Unionville head coach Janet Johnston. “She knows when to rally and when to apply heat. She has played in a lot of tough matches, but has a quiet confidence that really shines through on the court.”
Walter defeated Downingtown West’s talented freshman Tanya Pant, who came into Thursday’s match with a 4-1 record, her only loss coming to Episcopal Academy standout Ashley Kennedy.
“I thought I played a good match today; my first serve was pretty effective and my net play was good,” said Walter.
Unionville’s first doubles team of sophomore Faith Ilgner and freshman Jaclyn Santaguida improved their record as a duo to 7-0 this fall with a 7-5, 6-4 win Thursday, coming back after trailing in the first set 4-3.
“We kept hanging in there,” said Santaguida. “Faith has a good ground stroke.”
“Our skills complement each other well,” said Ilgner. “Jaclyn has a good putaway.”
Unionville’s second doubles team of senior Josie Liu and freshman Catherine Stone earned a 6-4, 6-4 win.
“We were serving well today, so we really had to try to take advantage of the net today,” said Liu.
Unionville had a freshman on each of its top three doubles teams Thursday, with ninth-grader Sophie Walter pairing with senior Maura Blair at third doubles for a 6-4, 6-4 win.
“Downingtown West has a strong team, and we had a lot of long volleys against them today,” said Blair. “We stayed tough and positive in adversity.”
Unionville completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win at fourth doubles by seniors Mia Maccario and Alexia Narun.
“I knew today would be a tremendously fun, challenging match,” said Johnston. “Downingtown West has a lot of experienced, well-coached players. I told our players that this [match] is what you play for.”
Downingtown West (6-1) came out on top in straight set wins at second singles and third singles.
At second singles, D-West sophomore Sophia Koons earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory to improve her record to 6-0. One of her wins this fall was against powerful Episcopal Academy, which helped the Whippets earn a 4-3 victory against the Churchwomen.
“My first serve was good today, and I was keeping the ball in play [well],” said Koons, whose mother (Nicole Benedix Koons) is a former Villanova basketball star and a member of the VU Hall of Fame (Induction Class of 2009).
At third singles, Whippet senior Lily Shi earned a gritty 6-3, 6-3 win, battling through the second set after getting a cramp in her left ankle midway through the second set.
“I felt like I needed to finish it [the second set],” said Shi.
Coming into Thursday’s match, Downingtown West had won five of its matches by a 7-0 score, plus a 4-3 win against powerful Episcopal Academy.
Downingtown West head coach Justin DePietropaolo said, “Our doubles teams all played close matches today. I told our team that this match is a good measuring stick for us right now, and that there’s a lot of [tennis] season left. Even though we lost two great players in Jordan Bradley and Holly Koons to graduation last spring, we’ve played well so far this season. Our players at second and third singles really stepped up, and we’re got a very talented player at first singles in Tanya Pant.”
