North Penn’s Velaga wins District 1-3A title

Springfield >> North Penn’s Esha Velaga coasted to the District 1-3A title at the Springfield YMCA this weekend, losing just 13 games in four matches.
On Friday, Velaga defeated CB South’s Grace Piro 6-3, 6-0 in what turned out to be her toughest match of the tourney. Next up she coasted past Owen J. Roberts’ Allison Root 6-2, 6-0 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
From there it was complete cruise control for the NP junior, routing WC Henderson’s Kylie Kochis 6-2, 6-2 to book a berth in the district finals.
Finally, it was another 6-2, 6-2 dominant victory in the finals against Unionville’s Grace Li.
Velaga, who is currently ranked 53rd nationally in the USTA 18 and under division with an amazing UTR of 9.59, will next prepare for the PIAA State Championships the weekend of Nov. 5-6 in Hershey.
There, she will try to join her sister Neha, who won a state championship in 2018.
