The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media 2021 Girls Tennis Preview

Girls tennis is set to begin this week and area coaches and players alike can take a collective deep breath that the season appears to be back to normal after last year.

And what a season it appears to be for area girls tennis players.

Wissahickon has lofty expectations after taking 2nd in District 1-3A last season. With Ella Chang returning and the addition of freshman sensation YiYi Huang the Trojans should at the very least battle it out with experienced Upper Dublin for the SOL Liberty crown. Both teams seem capable of making a run to the District 1 Tournament.

Another team to watch out for will be Methacton, who returns both top singles players in Alice Liang and Hana Nouaime.

Oh by the way, they have a freshman named Anika Suresh ready to step into No. 3 singles.

Liang and Nouaime combined to win the District 1-3A doubles title last season and went all the way to the state finals.

What they have in store for an encore should be fascinating to watch.

As far as individual accolades, one to watch out for will be Souderton’s Amanda Yang, who has only improved after winning the SOL Colonial singles title as a freshman.

Here is a capsule look at the other area teams.

ABINGTON FRIENDS
2019 record: 4-9
Returning Starters: Grace Sousa competed at No. 1 singles, Sr.; Bella Washington-Vasquez, Sr.; Zoe Gittleman, Sr.; Cydney Brown, Sr.; Lily Goldstein, Jr.; Bella Mele, Jr.
Outlook: Graduated three seniors but do return four varsity players, including Sousa at No. 1.

GERMANTOWN ACADEMY

Last Year’s Record: 4-2
Returning Starters: Maisy Betancourt, Grace Petersohn, Josie Munson, Ellee Segal, Clarissa Smith, Ava Toren, Brook Ashdale, Alexa Bear, Saanvi Bhatia, Lucy Harobin, and Elaine Li.
Outlook on the Season: “This a great group of girls. They have been through several head coaching changes over the last few years. They have managed the change each year with a competitive drive and a love for the sport. COVID and unpredictable circumstances had put added challenges to the past season. These girls are great competitors, and they were able to adapt to all the changes and challenges that came with last season. They are looking forward to having a full schedule.”

METHACTON
Head Coach: Jill Walker, 4th year
Returning Starters: Alice Liang, Hana Nouaime, Irene Biju, Dru O’Brien, Angela Lian, Morgan Coupe, Carlee Dellose
Top Newcomer: Anika Suresh
Outlook: “Looking forward to a competitive season especially at the top of the singles line up as Alice and Hana return for another big season after finishing second in the doubles state tournament together last season. New freshman Anika Suresh also has entered and will become a solid 3rd singles player for the team.”

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
Head Coach: Joy Grafenstine

Last Year’s Record: 14-0
Returning Starters: Dylan Conroy, junior; Beth Murray, junior; Shanele Tamulevicius, senior.

PENNRIDGE
Head Coach: Joe D’Aquito, fourth year
Returning Starters: Anoushka Batt, Jayne Lafty, Yvan Phan, Elizabeth Fronstin, Emily Jo.
Outlook: The Rams have experience returning in singles players Phan, Fronstin and Jo and coupled with second team all-league doubles players Batt and Lafty expectations are on the rise at Pennridge.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH
Head Coach: Al Collins, 12th year
Record in 2020:  5-8
Top Newcomers: Ashlyn Dubin, Elise Barbay
Outlook on Season: Young team with potential.

SOUDERTON

Last Year’s Record: 5-6

Top Newcomers: Kendra Yerger (so) Avantika Manna (fr)
Outlook: “I am very excited for the 2021 tennis season,” Myers said. “We have a solid group of senior leaders who were freshmen when I first started, so I am excited to see how far they have come in their final season. I am also looking forward to watching Amanda (Yang) defend her league title in a very competitive and talented league. We have an awesome mix of experienced returners and talented incoming freshmen and sophomores. I expect to compete in every match and get 1 percent better every day.”

UPPER DUBLIN

Returning Starters: Jill Hackett, Eva Yang, Ava Trauger, Ariela Cohen, Ciara Peyton, Kaelin Penna, Willow Kaplan, Norah Alavi, Jules Perkins, Rachel Burmester, Ashley Berman
Top Newcomers: Brie Watlington
Coach’s Quote: “This group of ladies have formed an incredible bond that promises to be an exciting and fun season.”
Outlook: Ball moves over from the boys to take over the girls program. She has depth and experience behind Hackett and Yang. Ball is particularly enamored with Trauger, who has shown great strides over the summer and will take over the No. 3 singles spot.

WISSAHICKON
Head Coach: Mary Ellen Devlin, 13th year.
Top Returners: Ella Chang; Lauren Kooman; Katie Lu; Ella Sanders, Claira Baldasano, Vanessa Urzua, Tiffany Chen, Saachi Mehti.
Top Newcomers: YiYi Huang, freshman; Hannah Yum.
Outlook: Very good to say the least. Coming off a 2020 season as the District 1 second-place finisher behind Spring-Ford, the Trojans may be up to the task again. That’s with the addition of freshmen YiYi Huang and Hannah Yum. Senior Ella Chang is back and will move up to No. 1 singles, while junior Saachi Mehit moves up to No. 3 singles.

Editor’s note: All area coaches were contacted for information regarding their team.

A senior at Episcopal Academy, Kennedy was named the Inter-Ac’s girls tennis Most Valuable Player in 2019 as a sophomore. She has received All-Main Line girls’ tennis first team honors each of the past three years. Next fall, she will be playing tennis for Georgetown University. Off the court at EA, she is one of the photography editors for Scholium, the school newspaper, and is a member of Key Club, which includes leading tours and being a shadow student for visitors. EA girls tennis coach Whit Powell said, “Ashley is one of the most complete tennis players I’ve seen. She has an all-court game and can adapt to any style of play. What makes her exceptional is her ability to dictate play from the baseline or the net. On top of it all, she is a tremendous athlete so she moves effortless around the court. She is a combination of power, finesse and intelligence.”

Main Line Media News: What do you think has been your best match of your Episcopal Academy career (to date)? What is your sharpest memory if it, and what was working particularly well for you that day?

Ashley Kennedy: Throughout my five years on the team, I have played many talented players in and outside of the Inter-Ac. My most memorable match would be an away match at Penn Charter when I was in 8th grade. I had just come back from competing in the Junior Team Tennis Nationals and wasn’t 100 percent physically. I received a lot of great advice from my coach, Whit Powell, and support from my team, which helped me win the match 6-2, 6-0. I played really smart and used every tool I had to win for my team.

Main Line Media News: What aspect of your game did you work on most during the past summer? What are you hoping to achieve this fall?

Ashley Kennedy: Over the summer, I worked a lot on playing an all-court game, specifically transitioning up to net and touch shots – drop shots, drop volleys and short angles. I hope to have a great season with the team and to continue improving every time I step on court.

Main Line Media News: Who are your favorite tennis players? Do you try to pattern your game after any of them?

Ashley Kennedy: My favorite player is Rafael Nadal. I try to play with heavy spin and angles when I’m on court which is a big part of Rafa’s game. He also fights for every ball and every point, which is what I want to do on the court.

Main Line Media News: What do you think is the strongest part of your game? What part of your game are you currently working on the most?

Ashley Kennedy: My return and my forehand are definitely the strongest parts of my game right now. I’m working on my serve, transitioning to the net, and using more variety.

Main Line Media News: Who have been your top tennis mentors, and what was the most important thing you learned from them?

Ashley Kennedy: My top mentors have honestly been all of my coaches. I feel like I learned a lot from each of them and I play using a combination of everything they taught me. I would not be the player I am today without them and I am extremely grateful for all of their help.

Main Line Media News: What attracted you to Georgetown University? What will you be majoring in?

Ashley Kennedy: There are so many things that attracted me to Georgetown! When I first looked into the school, I was drawn to the strong academics and athletics in a great town! As I got deeper into the recruiting process, I got to know the coach, the girls on the team, and the school better and I knew that it was the right choice for me! I am planning on majoring in either pre-med, biology or chemistry.

Fun facts – Ashley Kennedy

Favorite TV show: Friends.

Favorite athlete: Rafael Nadal.

Favorite pre-match pump-up song: “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd.

Favorite team: Philadelphia Eagles.

Favorite place to visit: Naples, Fla.

Person I most admire, and why: “The people I most admire are my mom and my grandfather. They have taught me so many lessons about how to succeed and be the best person, student, and player I can be.”

With the girls tennis season underway, the local traditional powers will look to add more hardware to their collection. All the teams are happy to get back to a somewhat more normal schedule after last year’s COVID-19 interruption.
In the Ches-Mont League National Division, Downingtown East returns the defending division champion, sophomore Danielle Litvan. They will count on each player to help make a valuable contribution.
Downingtown West has started out hots this season. Senior Alyssa Dehart and Sophia Koons return to add a wealth of experience. Abby Walter stepes in at third singles and freshman Sanni Varanaisi has been a relavation at second doubles.
“Our girls have trained hard this offseason with many of them competing in USTA tournament or team tennis competition,” said West coach Justin DePietropaolo. “However, we know that this will be a tough year in the Ches-Mont league and never underestimate any opponent. We’ve also scheduled some tough nonleague opponents, including both District 1 finalists from last year — Spring-Ford and Wissahickon.
Bishop Shanahan returns a wealth of talent headed by senior captain Theresa Tomasicchio, who returns at No. 1 singles. She dealt with injuries last season, but hopes her power game returns to form. Seniors Lauren Houser and Rebecca Hangey will be at second doubles. The duo brings court sense and athleticism to their game, which should make them a formidable pair.
One of the key youngsters who will be counted on is freshman Ella Matulewicz. She is a among the USTA players in the region in her age group and should make immediate contributions for the Eagles. Senior Emma McMonagle steps in after transferring to the school late in her junior year. Head coach Jamie Breen said she is a solid all-court player.
“We lost four starting seniors, which is always hard to overcome, but we have a lot of depth with returning seniors/juniors, and I expect our team to have a better season than last year,” said Breen. “Our singles is positioned to be strong with some very experienced players and our doubles should be better with so much competition. We have a large group of upperclassmen fighting for those starting eight doubles slots which should help us on the scoreboard this year. Our program is growing in size and will help us to continue player development with our underclassmen for years to come.”
The strength for West Chester East will be in their singles roster. Seinors Saoirse Dooley and Rachel Grobman will be featured at first and third singles respectively. Sophomore Audrey Beckman will see action at second singles.
West Chester Henderson will once be a contender for the Ches-Mont National title under coach Peter Sok. Ella Tunnell is a two-time first-team he DLN Girs Tennis All-Area selection. Kylie Kochis and Sophia Ming complete a very strong singles lineup. Kaitlyn Evans and Kiera Koay highlights the doubles lineup.
Avon Grove and Coatesville look to improve on their seasons last year and get some younger players valuable experience.
Over in the American Division, Unionville should once again, be the team to beat. The singles lineup is led by sophomore Grace Li, who has found success at the tournament level. Senior co-captain Meera Sehgal and junior Catherine Stone check in at second and third singles. Both bring a history of success and a variety of shots to the court.
“We have great depth and experience heading into this season and are hoping for deep post-season opportunities, said coach Janet Johnston.
“Faith Ilgner (senior and co-captain) at first doubles has anchored first doubles all four years of her high school career, the last three with (junior) Jaclyn Santaguida. They have proved very successful, with good teamwork and excellent doubles play. They have won key matches throughout their career in postseason play and look forward to continued success.”
West Chester Rustin and longtime coach Bill McElroy is led by sophomore Maya Tashie, who moves into the first singles position. Junior Adriana MacNeal is at second singles and freshman Emma Skinner holding the third spot. taking the 2nd singles spots. Older sister Ellison Skinner holds down the first doubles spot along with junior Taylor Kugh.
Great Valley hopes to qualify for districts behind senior captains Meg Corrigan, Sapna Chokshi and Ria Kokkengada. Sophomore Mabel Qiu, and junior Jess Corrigan & Sanya Tinaikar will also contribute at singles. Junior Ellie Kwak partners with Meg Corrigan at first doubles.
Conestoga has been close or on top of the Central League roost for years and return a stacked roster. Returning first-team All-Area member Leena Kwak leads the roster at first singles. The senior posted an 8-3 record last year and teamed with Ananya Krishman to win the Central League doubles title. Krishman went 11-0 at second singles last year. Katie Emmanuel was 11-0 as a freshman for the Pioneers to round out a formidable singles roster.
For Westtown, junior Jomkwan (Kapom) Vettayawaikoon marks her first year with the team. She has a strong baseline game ans should be an immediate contributor. Sophomore Amy Vaduva is a big hitter who is also a fierce competitor. Sophomore Alifa Teke is a relentless force who never gives up on a return.
