Spring-Ford’s Matriccino wins PAC singles title in rematch with Owen J. Roberts’ Root

GRATERFORD >> They have considerable tennis-match history between them.

It’s estimated Mia Matriccino and Allison Root have played each other previously at least six times — 3-4 times in high school. So when they faced off Saturday in the Pioneer Athletic Conference Singles Tournament championship match at Perkiomen Valley, the two did so with well-established measures of each other’s abilities and tendencies.

Matriccino measured up a bit taller in this replay of the PAC’s 2020 singles final. The Spring-Ford sophomore posted another straight-set win over Owen J. Roberts’ Root, 6-3, 6-1, to repeat as the PAC’s singles champion.

Still, Matriccino conceded facing Root is no one-size-fits-all game plan.

“It’s tough to say, because she plays different,” Matriccino said of her OJR adversary. “I try to keep her back using heavy balls, hitting hard returns and being aggressive.”

Root, also a sophomore, has her own time-developed assessment of Matriccino and the best way to keep her from scoring points.

“She’s definitely strong,” Root noted. “I try to hit deep so she can’t attack, and when I get a short ball, to attack.”

The rivals came into the championship match off semifinal-round wins over Methacton representatives Hana Nouiame and Alice Liang. Matriccino dispatched Nouaime 6-1, 6-1 while Root handled Liang 6-3, 6-0, sending both into an all-Warrior third-place pairing.

The championship sets started out in similar fashion, Matriccino taking initial 3-0 leads. In the first, though, Root cut the deficit down to 4-3 before Matriccino came on with a strong finish.

“I calmed down more,” Root said of the first set. “I was nervous, shaky at the start.”

In the second set, Root was visibly more frustrated by misses. Matriccino worked to put that to her advantage.

“I had to keep my foot on the gas pedal,” she said.

Another difference in the second set was Matriccino closing it out when the score was 4-1, as opposed to Root winning the back-to-back games when the score was 4-1 in the first.

“She’s such a good adaptor,” SF head coach Todd Reagan said of his super soph. “On people’s weaknesses, she tries to exploit them. With their strengths, she works to adjust to them.”

Spring-Ford’s memorable 2020 season — championships in the District 1 and PIAA Class 3A team tournaments — started with Matriccino winning PACs, then finishing as runner-up at districts, Her heady start to the postseason could serve as a good omen for the Rams in their bid to match 2020’s results.

Reagan, though, sees the road this year holding more obstacles.

“In districts this year, there will be 28 player instead of eight,” he said. “Last year, the Central League didn’t play because the schools started late. We hope Mia can stack up against them.”

Matriccino will be joined at 3-A districts by teammate Cady Krause, winner of the PAC’s fifth-place match. Krause, a 10-1 pro-set winner over Perkiomen Valley’s Gracie Strohecker in their consolation semifinal, ended up facing fellow Ram Isabel Mejia after her 10-1 win over Boyertown’s Kara Bussinger.

Krause got the league’s fifth and final slot with her 7-5, 6-1 win over Mejia.

“That’s a weird coaching moment,” Reagan admitted. “I’m invested in our girls in matches with other schools, but to have two of them playing each other …

“Fortunately, we’re able to divide coaching duties. I have assistants who are all capable of getting the girls motivated.”

Methacton representatives Nouaime and Liang — who paired together as the PAC’s doubles champions in 2020 — also qualified for 3-A districts with their high PAC finishes. The third-place final saw Liang beat Nouaime in two sets, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) and 6-4.

Spring-Ford girls tennis caps unbeaten PAC season to claim 3rd straight league title

UPPER PROVIDENCE >> It added another encore event to its encore 2021 season.

Spring-Ford scored a “threepeat” of Pioneer Athletic Conference girls tennis championships Thursday with a 7-0 sweep of Pope John Paul II. It had compiled unbeaten league records in 2019 (11-0) and 2020 (8-0), starting off a postseason run that saw the Rams win District 1-AAA and PIAA team titles.

“Around the league, the PAC championship is one of the most desired achievements,” head coach Todd Reagan said. “It took us a long time to win one — the first time we did was in 2016 — and I told the girls to enjoy being part of a history-making program.”

As was the case during the season, Spring-Ford (11-0, 15-0) won handily against the Golden Panthers. It dropped only four games throughout the lineup, all in doubles play.

For the season to date, the Rams scored 7-0 victories in all but one PAC match. That was a 6-1 duel with Methacton, one where Reagan noted the final score didn’t portray the actual way the match went.

“It was a close match,” he said. “There were a lot of close individual matches which we were able to pull out. Methacton is a quality district team.”

The latest title finish came less than a week after Spring-Ford’s top player, sophomore Mia Matriccino, repeated as the PAC’s singles champion. Matriccino will go into the District 1-AAA singles tournament as the third of eight seeds from a 28-player bracket.

Matriccino joined with Isabel Mejia and Cady Krause to give the Rams a solid singles ladder. In doubles, newcomers Kate Klein and Brooke McPike stepped up at third doubles to fill half of the vacancies created with the graduation of four team members from the Class of 2021.

“They had a lot of success last year,” Reagan said of his singles players. “They continually worked on their games in the offseason. They’re looking at great things to come.”

Spring-Ford will have one more regular-season match against Conestoga Oct. 5. It will then wait to see where it’s positioned in the District 1 Team Tournament bracket.

Springfield >> North Penn’s Esha Velaga coasted to the District 1-3A title at the Springfield YMCA this weekend, losing just 13 games in four matches.
On Friday, Velaga defeated CB South’s Grace Piro 6-3, 6-0 in what turned out to be her toughest match of the tourney. Next up she coasted past Owen J. Roberts’ Allison Root 6-2, 6-0 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
From there it was complete cruise control for the NP junior, routing WC Henderson’s Kylie Kochis 6-2, 6-2 to book a berth in the district finals.
Finally, it was another 6-2, 6-2 dominant victory in the finals against Unionville’s Grace Li.
Velaga, who is currently ranked 53rd nationally in the USTA 18 and under division with an amazing UTR of 9.59, will next prepare for the PIAA State Championships the weekend of Nov. 5-6 in Hershey.
There, she will try to join her sister Neha, who won a state championship in 2018.

SPRINGFIELD TWP. >> It was a rematch with different consequences.

Mia Matriccino and Allison Root played each other one week ago in the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s Singles Tournament championship match, which Matriccino won 6-3, 6-1. They faced off Saturday in the consolation round of the District 1-AAA singles competition at the Healthplex, but for the distinction of being an alternate to state singles.

Matriccino, a sophomore from Spring-Ford, and Root, a 10th grader from Owen J. Roberts, both got to the quarterfinal round Friday before losing. Root fell in straight sets to eventual champion Esha Velaga of North Penn 6-2, 6-0 and Matriccino was topped by Council Rock South freshman Dasha Chickina 6-4, 6-3.

Both girls advanced to the 5/6 match when their respective opponents defaulted. In their rematch, Matriccino won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Though the top four finishers are the only ones to advance to states, Matriccino will be the first alternate in the event one is unable to play at states. Behind Velaga, Unionville’s Grace Li was runner-up, West Chester Henderson’s Kylie Kochis third and Chickina fourth.

The PAC’s other district qualifiers bowed out during Friday’s action. Methacton’s Alice Liang won her opener with Upper Dublin’s Jill Hackett 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Li 6-2, 6-4; and teammate Hana Nouaime started out with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Spring-Ford’s Isabel Mejia before losing to Chickina 6-1, 6-2.

Spring-Ford’s Cady Krause lost to West Chester Henderson’s Ella Tunnell in the opening round, 6-1, 7-5.

Radnor’s Leina Ciarrocchi is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The Radnor sophomore, who is undefeated in Central League play at No. 1 singles, captured the Central League singles title this fall after placing third in the tourney last year. Her record as of October 4 is 13-1 (9-0 in the Central League). As a freshman, she was the MVP of a Radnor girls tennis squad that posted a 10-1 record, she achieved a 7-2 record at first singles and received first team All-Central League honors at singles. Radnor tennis head coach Pat Kurz said, “Leina keeps a positive attitude, and even if down in a match, she never feels like she is out of it.  I have seen her get behind and then turn it around and get the win.” Off the court, Ciarrocchi participates in a number of service clubs, including FBLA (Future business leaders of America), Action Earth, Care 4 Cancer and Project Produce.

Q: What is your sharpest memory of the recent Central League Tournament? What was working particularly well for you that day?

A: My favorite and sharpest moment in the Central League singles tournament would have to be the final. My opponent, Kate Emmanuel, is someone who I have played and trained with since the beginning of my tennis journey. Winning the final was a great moment where I realized how far we have come. In terms of how I was playing, I was definitely nervous going into it, but I pulled myself together and started playing a lot more aggressively and smartly.

Q: What aspect of your game did you work on most during the past summer? What are you hoping to achieve this fall?

A: This past summer I would say the part of my game that I have been working the most on was my serve and having a consistent routine on court. So far this fall, I have already achieved my main goal of winning Central League singles, but I also hope to make it to districts in Central League doubles with my partner, Mia Xie.

Q: What in your opinion has been your best match of the season to date? What was working well for you that day?

A: I think my best match this season was against Conestoga, Going on court, I definitely felt the pressure of winning since I won last year in a third set, but this was my favorite match because it showed how much I have improved from my first season to my second season playing high school tennis, and how much more comfortable I felt in the team environment. I went into that match with a positive mindset and went out with a positive mindset, and that really helped me get through the tough parts of that match.

Q: Who are your favorite tennis players? Do you try to pattern your game after any of them?

A: My current favorite tennis player is Emma Radacanu. I like the way she can stay aggressive and super consistent at the same time and how she is determined during every point, which is what I try to do.

Q: What do you think is the strongest part of your game? What part of your game are you currently working on the most?

A: I would say the strongest parts of my game are my first serve and forehand. I like to use these to my advantage, especially for when I am down in a match. I am currently working on my aggressiveness and finishing off points, which is very helpful when I don’t want to play long points.

Q: What is your favorite academic course at Radnor?

A: My favorite academic course right now is psychology. I’ve always been interested in people and how different people respond to different things.
